Hi, I'm Katie Bailey. I'm a registered dietician at Flusso Nutrients where we provide supplement education and professional quality supplement options for you to make the world of nutrition supplements a little bit easier to navigate.

As always, be sure to check with your main nutrition letter at healthcare provider before starting anything new. As we can't know your full medical history to make a personalized recommendation.

So without further ado, let's jump into today's topic.

What is Candida gut and what causes it?

Candida is a type of yeast that naturally resides in various parts of the human body, including the digestive tract.

While its presence is normal and generally harmless and overgrowth of this fungus can lead to a condition known as candida gut.

This occurs when the delicate balance of microorganisms in the gut is disrupted. This allows candida to rapidly overgrow and cause systemic symptoms.

There are several factors that can contribute to the development of candida overgrowth in the gut.

  1. The first is a poor diet.

So a highly processed diet with refined sugars and excessive carbohydrates can provide an ideal environment for candida to thrive.

Excessive alcohol can disrupt that gut microbiome and make it easier for candida to take hold.

2. Medications

Certain medications like antibiotics and birth control can increase your risk for candida overgrowth by killing off that beneficial bacteria in the gut.

3. Chronic Stress

And then lastly, chronic stress can also create an ideal environment conducive to candida overgrowth.

What are the symptoms of candida overgrowth and how do you test for it?

So candida overgrowth can manifest in many different ways and affect different parts of the body.

Some common symptoms include digestive issues like gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain.

It can lead to fatigue and brain fog, recurrent yeast infections or fungal infections of the skin, the nails or the oral cavity and the oral cavity.

It's called thrush, or you might see a white coating on your tongue.

It can cause mood swings, irritability, headaches, muscle aches, skin rashes or itchy skin, as well as chronic sinus infections and respiratory issues.

Now, it's important to note that these symptoms can also be caused by other conditions, so it's important to consult with a professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.

When it comes to testing, there are various methods for identifying the presence of candida.

  1. Stool Tests

The first is a comprehensive stool test, and this can detect the presence of candida in the digestive tract.

2. Blood Tests

Blood tests can measure antibodies produced by our immune system in response to candida overgrowth.

3. Urine Tests

Urine tests can detect metabolic byproducts of candida or produced by candida.

4. Oral Swabs

And then there are oral swabs that can be cultured to determine if there's candida in the oral cavity.

And sometimes these are all used in combination to properly diagnose candida.

Okay, so now let's jump into:

What herbal supplements might be beneficial for helping to get rid of candida?

The first one I want to talk about is called Spectrum BR.

This is a supplement that supports the health of the GI tract as well as the respiratory tract.

Now, there are herbal extracts in it that are known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

It also includes things like polyphenols, tannins, and flavonoids. And then it also contains berberine.

And berberine is antibacterial as well as antifungal, and it helps to kill yeast by attacking its cell membrane.

It's also helpful in healing intestinal permeability, also known as leaky gut.

It also has things like licorice and ginger root and alaria, which is known to be antifungal as well.

The next supplement I want to talk about is called GI Microbe X, and this is a supplement that supports GI microbial balance.

It contains a blend of botanicals like Artemesia, black walnut and UVI Ursa. And then it also contains berberine like we mentioned before, and caprylic acid.

Caprylic acid is a medium chain fatty acid that's found in coconut oil. It has antifungal properties that help to break down and inhibit candida by breaking through its cell membrane in biofilms. Now biofilms are a structure that the yeast creates over itself to protect itself from your immune system.

The last one I want to talk about is called Candibactrin AR.

And this is a supplement that's designed to support microbial balance and digestion. It has a blend of thyme and oregano oil, as well as other herbal extracts.

And oregano oil specifically is a natural antifungal that treats candida by breaking through its biofilms.

What are some additional lifestyle changes that can help with candida?

While herbal supplements can be beneficial in combating candida overgrowth, they should be combined with dietary and lifestyle changes.

To support overall gut health, you're going to want to adopt dietary changes that help to starve this fungus.

So yeast feeds on sugar, so you're going to want to limit your consumption of refined sugars, processed carbohydrates and alcohol, and focus more on proteins and healthy fats and non-starchy carbohydrates.

You're also going to want to increase probiotic intakes through probiotic rich foods or supplements to help support that gut microbiome.

Lactobacillus strains in particular have been shown to inhibit the rate of candida growth.

By regulating the acidity in the gut, which is a beneficial yeast is also good as it can help break down the biofilms that the candida hides in as well as crowd out the candida.

And then lastly, manage stress levels working on meditation or yoga or deep breathing as we know that chronic stress can be conducive to candida overgrowth.

Conclusion

To wrap up our topic for today, candida overgrowth in the gut can lead to various uncomfortable symptoms while addressing the underlying root causes through dietary and lifestyle changes are crucial.

Incorporating herbal supplements that contain things like berberine or caprylic acid or oregano oil can provide additional support in helping to combat candida overgrowth and restore balance to the digestive system.
