Butyrate Supplements For Leaky Gut Healing - Helpful?

Updated: May 28

Video Transcript:

Hi everyone. Welcome back to our channel.

Have you ever considered that a substance that's produced in your gut could be the key to healing your gut?

If you're not familiar with butyrate, butyrate is a short chain fatty acid that is produced in our gut and can provide us with many benefits and butyrate.

Supplements are becoming increasingly popular as a potential for remedy for leaky gut, which is a condition that's quite common today.

If you're struggling with leaky gut or gut health in general, butyrate may be something to consider.

In today's video, I will discuss the relationship between butyrate and gut health, particularly focusing on leaky gut and how these supplements may be beneficial in managing this condition.

Hi, I'm Katie Bailey. I'm a registered dietician at Flusso Nutrients where we provide supplement education and professional quality supplement options for you to make the world of nutrition supplements a little bit easier to navigate.

As always, be sure to check with your main nutrition literate healthcare provider before starting anything new. As we can't know your full medical history to make a personalized recommendation.

So without further ado, let's jump into today's topic.

What is Leaky Gut Syndrome?

Leaky gut syndrome is a condition where the intestinal lining becomes permeable and substances that are normally contained within the gut can enter the bloodstream.

It's thought to be linked to many different health conditions from anywhere from digestive issues to systemic inflammation, and the intestinal lining is one of the body's defenses against toxins and pathogens.

But when this barrier becomes compromised, substances like undigested food particles, toxins, and harmful bacteria can leak into the bloodstream, and this can lead to an immune response.

Symptoms associated with leaky gut include gas and bloating, cramping, food sensitivities, and joint pain, and factors such as a poor diet, toxin overload, chronic stress, and bacterial imbalances can all contribute to this condition.

Leaky Gut Healing - Butyrate Supplements

Now that we reviewed leaky gut, let's talk a little bit about butyrate.

So butyrate is also known as butyric acid, and it's a short chain fatty acid that plays a critical role in maintaining our gut health.

Butyrate Supplements For Leaky Gut Healing - Helpful?, butyrate supplements, leaky gut healing, butyrate producing bacteria, short chain fatty acids, butyrate rich foods, butyrate benefits, butyrate foods, ibd supplements, ibs supplements, inflammation supplements, supplements for gut inflammation, chronic inflammation treatment, healthy large intestine

It's a primary energy source for the cells that line our colon, and it has anti-inflammatory properties that are essential in keeping the intestinal barrier intact and functioning properly.

Butyrate is produced by butyrate producing bacteria in our gut when they ferment dietary fiber, and these bacteria help maintain a balanced microbial environment in the gut, which is vital to our overall health.

The Gut Microbiome

Now, there are various factors that can affect the composition of our gut microbiome, things like our diet, lifestyle factors, and antibiotic use.

When the population of butyrate producing bacteria is healthy and diverse, then our gut is more likely to be and function optimally.

So supporting the growth of this beneficial bacteria is key to ensuring that we have a steady production of butyrate, which can be done through eating a diet that's rich and diverse fibers as well as pre and probiotics.

Short Chain Fatty Acids

Now, before I get to the benefits of butyrate, I just want to touch on short chain fatty acids in general.

So the short chain fatty acids that are produced in our gut are butyrate, propionate, and acetate, and they all play a vital role in regulating the pH in our colon, which inhibits the growth of pathogenic bacteria.

They also serve as signaling molecules that interact with our immune system and also influence our metabolic health.

So eating a diet that's rich in fiber from whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables, can all ensure that you're having a steady production of short chain fatty acids.

Butyrate Benefits

Okay, so how is butyrate beneficial and how can it help with our gut health?

Well, first off, like we had talked about before, it is the fuel for the cells of our colon, and this is going to help maintain that intestinal lining.

It also helps to regulate our immune system, reducing inflammation and decreasing our risk for colon cancer, as well as also helping to improve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease.

Butyrate has been shown to decrease chronic inflammation because of its anti-inflammatory properties.

So by reinforcing the gut barrier and regulating our immune response, it can decrease the inflammation that contributes to leaky gut.

And lastly, it has a positive effect on insulin sensitivity and can help reduce our blood sugar levels while your body produces butyrate through the fermentation of fiber consuming foods that directly and indirectly increase butyrate can also be beneficial.

Butyrate Foods

So foods that are high in resistant starch like green bananas cooked and cooled potatoes and whole grains can promote the production of butyrate through feeding that butyrate producing bacteria in the gut.

Additionally, consuming butter and ghee, which have small amounts of butyrate in them could also be beneficial.

Butyrate Supplements

Now, when it comes to supplementation, butyrate supplements can typically be found in either the sodium butyrate form or the calcium magnesium form.

And the goal with these supplements is to provide a direct source of butyrate, especially in situations where the butyrate producing bacteria may be diminished, or the dietary fiber intake is insufficient.

By supplementing with butyrate, you may be able to support the health and integrity of your gut lining. In factors such as the form of butyrate, the dosage, and an individual's current health status can influence the effectiveness of the supplement.

So I would highly recommend working with a professional who can help you get the most out of this supplement. So to wrap up our topic for today, butyrate supplements show potential as a beneficial aid in helping to heal the he gut.

They support the gut lining, they can help decrease inflammation, and they can help contribute to a healthy gut microbiome.

However, the effectiveness is going to vary from person to person depending on your individual health status or condition.

While butyrate supplements can be part of a leaky gut protocol, it's important to remember that it's only one piece of the puzzle.

So eating a diet that's balanced and rich in fiber and really trying to manage your stress levels and getting regular physical activity and adequate sleep can also all promote our gut health.
