What is magnesium citrate liquid for constipation?
So magnesium citrate is a form or type of magnesium supplement that's made by combining magnesium and citric acid, and it's commonly used to support digestion as well as relieve constipation. Magnesium citrate is found in liquid capsule or powder form. Now, magnesium citrate is known as a natural laxative, and this particular type is highly bioavailable, meaning that it's easily absorbed by the body, especially when taken in liquid and powder form.
Now, it can help to relax the muscles and pull more water into the GI tract to soften the stool, which is going to make it easier to pass and promote regular bowel movements. It also helps to regulate the activity of various enzymes that are needed to help us break down the food that we eat for proper digestion. And then lastly, magnesium also aids in muscle contraction. That's going to help move food through the GI system when this is known as peristalsis.

So what are the benefits of magnesium citrate supplements?
So we know that it helps to relieve constipation as it acts as a natural laxative that's going to pull water into the intestines, making it easier to pass and promoting smoother and more regular bowel movements. It can also help with our gut health and digestion. So magnesium is essential for proper digestion and helping to relax the muscles in the intestines to help food move down and contributing to better digestion.
Next is potentially better sleep. So magnesium is going to promote relaxation and calm down the nervous system, which can be really beneficial for those that struggle with sleep, especially when they take magnesium before bed. It's also beneficial for nutrition support. So it's going to add additional magnesium to your diet if you don't get enough already and address any potential magnesium deficiencies, which are quite common in this population. And then lastly, muscle and nerve support. So magnesium plays an essential role in muscle and nerve function.
What are the potential side effects?
So there are a few side effects just to be aware of when taking magnesium citrate. The first or the most common one is diarrhea. So because magnesium citrate works by pulling water into the intestines, it can lead to diarrhea if it's taken in excess. The next is abdominal discomfort.
Now, there are some individuals that may experience bloating or cramping or just abdominal discomfort when they take magnesium citrate. And then lastly, dehydration. Dehydration can occur if an individual is not drinking enough water while they're taking this supplement. Now this is because we're pulling more water out of the system into the GI tract, and if you don't have enough water to go around, then that can contribute to dehydration.
Alright, so how do you take magnesium citrate?
So taking magnesium citrates pretty straightforward. You want to follow the dosage recommendations on whichever brand you choose, or the dosage that is recommended by your practitioner. Dosage is going to depend on your specific needs as well as your current situation. But typically dosages range from 200 to 500 milligrams. Although you can take magnesium anytime during the day, it's often beneficial to take it before bed because it does promote relaxation and help sleep. But it's also going to help to work overnight to have a morning bowel movement.
Magnesium citrate liquid can be just taken as is, or it can be added to a water or another beverage. It's important to remember to be drinking plenty of water when you're taking magnesium citrate supplements in order to reduce the risk of dehydration, because like we mentioned before, it is pulling more water out of your system into the GI tracts. You want to make sure you have plenty of water on board to do that.
What additional tips can help relieve constipation?
So in order to support overall gut health and relieve constipation, the first thing that you can do is to increase the amount of fiber rich foods that you eat. So including a variety of different colored fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans and legumes, and nuts and seeds. You want to make sure you're getting adequate hydration as well. So drinking enough water is going to really help to soften that stool and prevent constipation. Physical activity is also really important, so that exercise is going to help to stimulate digestion and promote regular bowel movements.
Now, it is important to note that sometimes constipation is a chronic issue and there may be underlying root causes that may be contributing to the constipation you're experiencing. So if this is the case, you may need to work with the practitioner that can help you determine your specific root cause of your constipation, especially if you've tried all these other things before and you haven't had any success as magnesium citrate is generally a short-term solution.
